The Kalamazoo Promise School Portal

The Kalamazoo Promise utilizes real-time recruiting, award, suspension, and completion rosters to administer the scholarship. Authorized school users can access their award rosters through the Promise School Portal. To see a full description of the rosters and using the Promise School Portal please see the School Portal User Guide. The school portal includes a summary of Promise scholar usage and invoices and grades received in addition to the rosters.

  • Students who have listed your school on an approved Promise application and have not yet determined what school they will attend .

  • Promise Scholars who are eligible and approved to use their Promise at your institution.

  • Promise Scholars who are currently at a suspension status for their Promise. Scholars must work with their Promise advocate to either request Extended Probation or reinstate their Promise scholarship before they can utilize their Promise funding again. Please see our Kalamazoo Promise Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards for more details.

  • Promise Alum whose eligibility has been exhausted by either completing a bachelor’s degree, using 145 Promise credits or it has been 10 years since their high school graduation. These students may not have completed their post-secondary journey at your institution.

  • The Kalamazoo Promise is a scholarship for each Kalamazoo Public School’s resident graduate that provides up to 100% tuition for post-secondary education. To see details about eligibility for the scholarship please see our eligibility page.

    Eligibility for The Kalamazoo Promise

  • This agreement covers tuition and mandatory fees only and does not cover other expenses such as room and board or books.

  • Scholars can use their scholarship until any of the conditions below are met. - Whichever occurs first

    • 145 credits have been awarded

    • A Bachelor's degree is completed

    • 10 years from the date of high school graduation

    • Exceptions are granted for military service

    *Students whose eligibility has been exhausted will appear on the completion roster

  • No. Eligibility ends ten years from the date of high school graduation.

  • No. However, many institutions will waive the application fee if it is requested due to financial hardship. There are also organizations in the Kalamazoo Community that are setting up funds to assist students who are unable to pay these fees.

  • If a deposit is required, it is the student’s responsibility to cover the deposit.

  • Part-time is acceptable for the following:

    • All students at Community Colleges

    • All students enrolled during summer semesters

    • On a case-by-case for all other scholars. Students must contact our Scholarship Administrator to receive an exception.

  • Yes! Summer school classes will be covered if they apply toward the degree or certificate program in which the student is enrolled and is taken at their designated school of choice.

    A student may also request permission to take summer classes at Western Michigan University or Kalamazoo Valley Community College if these are not their normal school of choice. However, a special permission form must be completed and approved in order to take summer classes at these schools.

  • Study abroad is only covered if the program is administered by the Promise college or university the student is attending. We will not cover any extraordinary tuition or fees associated with studying abroad.

  • No. The Promise can only be used for mandatory fees and tuition.

  • This scholarship program provides up to 145 tuition credits and mandatory fees for post-secondary education. Schools are allowed and encouraged to apply The Kalamazoo Promise as the 1st dollars of financial aid. This should ensure that students receive the maximum amount of free financial aid.

  • The Kalamazoo Promise will be awarded at MCA institutions at the same percentage as other Promise institutions based on the average tuition and fees for the College of Literature, Science and Arts at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Each MCA institution will match — through institutional grants and other non-loan sources — the tuition and fee cost differential between its annually published tuition and fees, and this rate.   • No, the Kalamazoo Promise does not cover graduate school programs. However, if the student is dual enrolled during their last semester of their undergrad program, the Promise would cover those graduate level classes.

  • Any scholar listed on the award roster is eligible and may be awarded regardless of status. If we change a student to a non-award status, we will communicate with the school directly.

Meet Our Scholarship Administrator

Perla Ascencio

Perla Ascencio is the Scholarship Administrator at The Kalamazoo Promise. She is the primary person responsible for the day-to-day operation of The Kalamazoo Promise scholarship’s administrative functions. This includes all scholar and post-secondary institution processes and communication.

Before coming to the Promise, Perla gained useful life and professional experience in diverse roles that range from dining services, to Collections Agencies, Shift Lead, Accounts Payable Clerk, and even Community Engagement Manager at El Concilio in Kalamazoo. She believes her experience in all walks of life have been vital to her development and led her to her current role.

Perla earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration from WMU in June of 2022. She is excited about her future with the Promise and looks forward to collaborating with other organizations to better serve her community.
