Promise Scholar- Shamond Bean

Author: Giselle Martinez

Shamond Bean's journey into post-secondary education has been anything but traditional. From navigating life as a tech enthusiast, moving between factory jobs, to now pursuing his passion for computer science at Lansing Community College, Shamond’s story is a testament to how education, hard work, and a supportive community can transform a life.

Shamond’s love for technology started early, but his path wasn’t always clear. “I’ve always been a tech nerd,” he admits. Yet, after spending years bouncing between factory jobs, he realized he wanted more from his career. “I was tired of factory work and wanted to do something I’m passionate about.” This passion led him to pursue computer science, where he is now thriving, with plans to transfer to Kettering University next fall.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Shamond is also a father. Balancing school, work, and family life is no easy feat. “It gets tough,” Shamond shares, recalling a time when his daughter was hospitalized for a week. Despite these challenges, he’s managed to maintain a 3.9 GPA, a significant achievement compared to his high school days, where he graduated with a 1.8 GPA. Now, Shamond finds joy in his classes, even those he didn’t expect to enjoy, like philosophy.

His involvement in extracurriculars like Elevate and Phi Theta Kappa has also helped him grow both personally and professionally. Through these organizations, Shamond has found mentors who have guided him along the way. “Coty and Elizabeth from the Elevate program have helped me tremendously,” he says. “They’ve been there from helping me apply to school to guiding me in finding resources.”

Managing time between his studies, work as a tech intern at the local library, and being a father, life hasn’t been easy. But Shamond credits his ability to balance it all to perseverance and the support from his family, especially his daughter’s mother. “Having a family has definitely helped me overcome obstacles,” he reflects. Additionally, the Kalamazoo Promise has lightened his financial burden, allowing him to focus more on school rather than working full-time.

With graduation on the horizon, Shamond is already looking ahead. His goal is to find a job in his field and eventually become a business owner. He’s driven by the desire to create a better future for himself and his family.

To scholars who might follow a similar path, Shamond offers this advice: “Even if you don’t like high school, give college a chance. It’s a whole different experience, and just one semester might change your view on education.”

Today, Shamond sees education through a completely different lens. Where once school felt like an obligation, it’s now something he enjoys. “My view of education has changed drastically,” he says. “In high school, I didn’t care much. Now, I actually enjoy my classes and find value in the knowledge I’m gaining.”

Shamond Bean’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to change your path. Through dedication, perseverance, Shamond is proof that success is possible for those willing to take the leap and pursue their passions.
