Promise Scholar- Rianna Clay-Valdez

Meet Rianna Clay-Valdez, a senior at Western Michigan University majoring in Finance and Business Administration. Rianna’s journey is one of resilience, growth, and determination. She’s a Greenleaf Trust Scholar for 2024 and has just landed a position as a Wealth Developer in Greenleaf Trust's Wealth Development Program. But her story is more than just a list of accomplishments—it's a testament to following one's passion and making a difference.

Rianna's path to finding her passion wasn't straightforward. She started her college journey at Kalamazoo College, majoring in Microbiology. But as she moved forward, she realized that her heart wasn't in it. So, she switched to Computer Science, driven by her love for coding. Even then, something was missing. After some deep reflection, she recognized that what she truly enjoyed was finance—something she had been fascinated by since childhood when she watched her grandparents and single mother manage their finances. This realization led her to change her major to Finance, a decision that has shaped her future.

Transferring to Western Michigan University was a meaningful choice for Rianna, as the school has become a family legacy. Being part of this legacy adds a special sense of pride to her achievements. Rianna's involvement at WMU has been nothing short of impactful. As a Greenleaf Trust Scholar, she engaged in professional development activities that played a key role in her growth. Getting the scholarship wasn’t easy—after being initially rejected, she applied again in 2023 and succeeded. This determination is a hallmark of her character.

Rianna’s internship at Stryker, where she works in the Treasury department analyzing cash flows and investments, has been a game-changer. At Stryker, she found a supportive community in the SAAN ERG, where she connected deeply, especially through events like the Juneteenth block party and DEI summits. These experiences changed her perspective on the corporate world, making her feel like she truly belonged.

One of the most transformative experiences for Rianna was her study abroad trip to the Dominican Republic, offered through Western Michigan University and exclusively available to Kalamazoo Promise Scholar. This experience not only allowed her to reconnect with old friends but also led her to join the Kalamazoo Promise Scholars RSO at WMU. Her involvement in this organization has deepened her commitment to supporting other Promise Scholars and expanding the group’s reach to other colleges.

Rianna’s leadership and involvement in her community didn’t go unnoticed. She was awarded membership in the National Society of Leadership and Success, a recognition that initially surprised her. But through this experience, she learned to value her own contributions and leadership.

Rianna's academic journey hasn't been without challenges. She faced tough times, including contracting COVID-19 multiple times, dealing with family losses, and experiencing imposter syndrome. These struggles led to her taking incompletes in some of her classes, but she didn’t let that stop her. She sought support from campus counseling services and found creative outlets like dancing to cope with the stress. Now, as the CEO of CLAY STUDIOS LLC, she offers Afro-Latin dance classes and performance contracting. Her goal is to open a physical studio where Black and Brown communities can explore and celebrate their cultures.

Looking ahead, Rianna is excited about her future. Alongside her ongoing collaboration with Stryker and her new role at Greenleaf Trust, she also worked on the world premiere of "BAMBILAND" with FaceOff Theatre Company in Kalamazoo. Her dream of opening a dance studio in Kalamazoo is another way she hopes to connect and empower Black and Brown communities through Afro-Latin culture.

Rianna’s story is an inspiration. Her advice to others, especially women of color, is to support one another, recognize their own talents and experiences, and nurture their communities. As Rianna continues her journey, her commitment to making a positive impact on her community and the finance industry shines through.
