Promise Scholar- Mia VandenBerg
Author: Giselle Martinez
Mia VandenBerg, a senior at Western Michigan University, is pursuing a degree in human resource management at the Haworth College of Business. Throughout her academic journey, she has actively utilized the various resources provided by Western to advance her professional career.
Her passion for human resources ignited while working as a cashier at Target during the pandemic. Initially drawn to the biomedical field, she discovered her love for training people in her job, prompting a change in her major from biomedical science to human resources.
VandenBerg has been involved in many extracurricular activities during her time at Western. She currently holds the position of Vice President of Professional Events for the Society for Excellence in Human Resources (SEHR). This has helped her with her honors thesis project, hosting an alumni dinner on the 25th anniversary of the Human Resources Management program. Her commitment includes attending events such as TechNext in San Francisco, which immerses students in the technology industry.
Despite her current success, VandenBerg faced challenges during her time at Loy Norrix High School. Struggling with maintaining good grades and focus, she initially doubted her ability to succeed academically. She sought support from The Kalamazoo Promise when she decided to change her career path and overcome academic struggles. VandenBerg found reassurance in knowing her scholarship was secured and was thankful for The Promise's flexibility while going through these changes.
VandenBerg's professional and personal growth has been remarkable at the Haworth College of Business. From finding valuable mentorship to landing internships such as Rocket Central, attending Western has clarified her post-undergrad career goals.
As VandenBerg nears the completion of her degree at Western Michigan University, she plans to continue her education. She has received offers from institutions such as Cornell University, the University of Minnesota, and Ohio State University to obtain her master's degree. Her goal is to one day become a Chief Human Resource Officer.
Offering advice to aspiring professionals, VandenBerg suggests, "Do things that you are interested in, resonate with, and are passionate about. If you don't feel that about your current career choice, perhaps it's time to explore other options."
