Promise Scholar- Cain Sandoval
Author: Giselle Martinez
Meet Cain Sandoval, a scholar on his academic journey at Western Michigan University. Sandoval's major is in Digital Media and Journalism, with a minor in Global and International Studies.
Sandoval's fascination with media traces back to his time at Loy Norrix High School. He was first introduced to media production through an Educational for Employment (EFE) class at the Epic Center, facilitated by the Public Media Network. This experience ignited his curiosity for video and audio production. Sandoval wasted no time immersing himself in various projects. Notably, he collaborated with Henry Paworth, an emerging artist in Kalamazoo, to craft cover art for a single release—an endeavor that showcased his talent and creativity.
Having The Kalamazoo Promise scholarship ensured that Sandoval could attend college without uncertainty. Despite his confidence in his chosen path at Western and his active engagement in field-aligned projects, he was unprepared for the emotional journey that college would present.
As Sandoval began his college journey, he felt a blend of emotions - excitement and happiness mingled with a sense of guilt he had not expected. As a first-generation college student, he encountered a sensation known as "breakaway guilt" during his transition into higher education. Leaving behind family, friends, and the community to pursue higher education led to this feeling. His parents' aspirations for his education coupled with the strain of leaving his parents to navigate an unfamiliar experience left Sandoval feeling unsettled. In understanding his parents' sacrifices, Sandoval was driven to achieve academic success by their unwavering support.
Currently, Sandoval is involved in the Kalamazoo Promise Scholars at WMU, a registered student organization (RSO) where he serves as the marketing director. In this role, he spearheads marketing efforts, designs flyers, and manages their social media platforms. For Sandoval, the RSO holds special significance—it's a platform where Promise Scholars attending Western can come together and foster a sense of community and camaraderie. He aims to cultivate an inclusive environment where scholars can partake in the college experience, irrespective of their living arrangements.
Sandoval and a cohort of Promise Scholars spent spring break this year in the Dominican Republic on a study abroad program led by Dr. Mark Orbe. Immersed in its vibrant culture, the Scholars gained invaluable experiences that enriched their academic pursuits and expanded their global perspectives.
As he progresses through his academic journey, Sandoval is set to be part of Higher Promise 2024 and has secured an internship with The Kalamazoo Promise. As well as these endeavors, he is also actively involved on campus and pursuing personal production ventures, which are all ways he is expanding his network.
