Higher Promise Internship:
Accounting Intern at Kalamazoo Public Schools
What are your career goals?
Finishing up my BBA, then taking the CPA (Certified Public Accounting) exam, starting with the first section in December. After that, I will be starting my second tax internship in January. I’d like to work for a public accounting firm following my MSA completion. My long-term career goal is to have my own accounting firm along with other professionals while helping my community.
How confident are you that your Higher Promise Internship will help you reach these goals?
Higher Promise gave me the opportunity to acquire and improve skills that will be helpful in my professional journey. It allowed me to expand upon my resume, exposed me to a more diverse workplace, and showed me different sides of the accounting profession. Most of what I have been exposed to during college has been public accounting, which differs from what I experienced during my internship with KPS. I feel like this experience has made me more confident in my abilities.
What has been your favorite part of the internship?
The workforce navigation training program was amazing. It allowed me to connect with a group of diverse, talented, and passionate students who were working in different professions and industries. The networking and resume building provided through the workshop was very valuable.
Would you recommend Higher Promise to other Promise Scholars? If so, why?
Definitely. When I first heard about it, I didn’t think it was for me, but it allowed me to connect with others, build tangible skills, and expose me to career development opportunities I otherwise may have not known about. Having this internship will give anyone an advantage when it comes to applying for full-time positions
