Angelita Aguilar
Director of Credential Completion
As Director of Credential Completion at the Kalamazoo Promise, Angelita’s goal is to see a drastic increase in the completion of Certificates, Associates, and Bachelors degrees of Promise recipients. Angelita believes that all Kalamazoo Public School students should have options and opportunities to reach their career, vocational, and personal goals. Each young person should be afforded equitable opportunities for discovery and enrichment while completing the type of credential that fits their personal and professional goals. The road to success is different for every individual, and goals are attained in a multitude of ways. One of her favorite quotes that has driven her work in education comes from Angela Davis, which states, “walls turned sideways are bridges.”
Angelita has served high school students and families for the last 18 years, as a middle school and high school counselor and dean of students. In the last nine years, she has had the privilege of working closely with the Kalamazoo Promise and Kalamazoo Central high school students in creating graduation and post-secondary plans that fit individual student needs, as well as promoting opportunities such as dual enrollment, Advanced Placement coursework, and EFE/EFA programs for career and college preparation. Angelita’s passion is to promote educational attainment through social justice and equity in public institutions. She believes that youth deserve opportunities, where equitable means are provided to enrich them and enhance the entire community.
Angelita holds an Associates in Arts degree from Victor Valley College, a Bachelors degree in Latin American Literature from Humboldt State University, and a Masters degree from California State University, San Bernardino in Counseling and Guidance.
